DeLuxe Bar & Grill expands its happy hour menu
The longstanding DeLuxe Bar & Grill on Capitol Hill has 19 beers on tap and is spotlighting classic and barrel-aged cocktails.

For 30 years, DeLuxe Bar & Grill has been running Wednesday burger specials at the corner of East Roy Street and East Broadway, drawing lines that can spill out the front door.
The "Burgerama" deal is a souped up burger with a side of garlicky fries for $5.59, every Wednesday. The regulars know to come by 6 p.m. Come at 8 p.m. — rookie! — and a host will smile and politely take your name down on the wait list. The wait can be 5 minutes to a half-hour.
It's a smoky burger, made from prime-grade ground chuck, chargrilled and dressed with the usual (bacon and cheddar) or unusual (kimchi). If you want the burger medium-rare, request it or it will be served medium-well.
There is a lot of history here. It was a liquor store before Prohibition, an ice-cream shop during Prohibition and, after the end of the alcohol ban, it became one of the first bars to open in the city. In 1962, business partners Joe Rogel and Bernie Minsk took it over. Rogel's son Barry owns it now.
Recent changes were made to keep up with the times: an expanded happy-hour menu and craft cocktails.
The happy-hour menu features some Tex-Mex to go with some bar snacks. There are the oddly appealing chicken strips, breaded in Indian lentil crackers that are a cross between chicken katsu and Buffalo wings. The tater tots come with an addicting bacon-cheese fondue that you'll dip and dip again. But the deep-fried mac-and-cheese balls were just crunchy, no flavor.
Best deal is the burger. If you come just for the happy hour, avoid going on Wednesday when it coincides with "Burgerama." It's hectic and service can be slow.
Classic and barrel-aged cocktails get the spotlight on the menu now. The bar has also stocked up on whiskey in the past two years.
But beer is still your best bet: 19 beers on tap, from European to Northwest craft beer. Some recent additions include the Ace Pumpkin Cider (one of the "it" drinks in Seattle now) and a bourbon barrel-aged beer (oaky and vanilla) from Widmer Brothers.
DeLuxe Bar & Grill, 625 Broadway Ave. E., offers happy hour daily 3-6 p.m. and again 10 p.m.-1 a.m., with $1 off well drinks and draft beers, $6 cocktails and $3.95 wine.
