FareStart honored at 2011 James Beard Foundation Awards in New York
FareStart received the "Humanitarian of the Year" award from the 2011 James Beard Foundation Awards in New York on Monday night.

FareStart received the "Humanitarian of the Year" award from the 2011 James Beard Foundation Awards in New York on Monday night, with judges extolling the Seattle program for providing culinary job training to nearly 5,000 disadvantaged people in the past 19 years.
At the Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall, Chris Canlis and Tom Douglas, well-known Seattle restaurateurs, presented the award to FareStart's executive director, Megan Karch.
"It has always been our mission to empower homeless and disadvantaged individuals while creating nourishing and excellent food. To be recognized by the food industry is not only exciting, it's a confirmation of something we've known all along — the power of community," she said.
But it was not a good night for Seattle chefs, who were shut out in some of the most prestigious honors in the industry. Douglas had been nominated for the "Outstanding Restaurateur" award, and Matt Dillon of Sitka & Spruce and Ethan Stowell of Staple & Fancy Mercantile were in the running for the "Best Chef: Northwest" category. The latter award went to Andy Ricker of Pok Pok in Portland.
Per Se in New York City beat Canlis for "outstanding service."
