Hope Solo, star goalkeeper of the U.S. women’s national team and Reign FC, will practice this week and be eligible for Saturday’s Reign home game against Sky Blue FC amid charges of fourth-degree domestic violence assault at a family event last weekend.

Solo, making her first comments since she was arrested, apologized in a statement Thursday posted to her Facebook page.

“I understand that, as a public figure, I am held to a higher standard of conduct,” the statement read. “I take seriously my responsibilities as a role model and sincerely apologize to everyone I have disappointed.”

Solo, 32, has been charged with assaulting her 17-year-old nephew and his mother, Solo’s older half-sister, in an incident starting Friday night in Kirkland. She pleaded not guilty in a hearing Monday and was released on her own recognizance, but she was ordered to avoid drinking alcohol and contact with the alleged victims.

The Reign had declined to comment until Thursday, when it also posted a statement on Facebook.

“This investigation, which has included multiple conversations with Hope, made it clear that there are differing perspectives on the events that led up to Hope’s arrest,” the team statement read. “As such, we feel it is fair and prudent to await the outcome of the legal process before making a final judgment about the incident.”

The team said it hopes Solo is cleared of any wrongdoing, but “should that not be the case, we will take the necessary and appropriate action at that time, in a manner consistent with the values and beliefs of our organization.”

The Reign added that Solo “has consistently been a great teammate” and that the team has been “proud to have her as a member of this club.”

Solo, whose next hearing is scheduled for Aug. 11, said in her statement that she hopes the situation will be resolved within the family. She added that she won’t comment further but that she is “confident in the legal process and believe my name will be cleared.”

“I look forward to getting back on the field where I belong with both Seattle Reign FC and the U.S. Women’s National Team.”
