Happy Almost-Solstice Monday:

Backers of Initiative 1240, the measure to bring charter schools to Washington, started gathering signatures Sunday. They must gather more than 240,000 valid signatures at hyper speed.

The initiative is one of the latest --- if not the latest --- in history to begin signature gathering. Less than three weeks to go until the July 6 deadline. The group sponsoring charter schools apparently has plenty of money. Time is the biggest challenge. A Thurston County Superior Court judge Friday finalized ballot-title language and cleared the way for signature gathering to begin.

And you thought Washington's initiative to legalize marijuana, Initiative 502, was home grown. Wanted to share a provocative piece from The Atlantic Wire suggesting that such measures are part of a broader plan by the Obama administration to boost the youth vote in several states. And, of course, drive up vote prospects for the Democratic president.

The piece recalls the 2004 presidential election when the George W. Bush campaign wanted anti-gay marriage ballot initiatives on the ballot in certain states to bring more conservative voters to the polls.

It's difficult not to chuckle at this campaign tactic: a flash mob in support of the state's new gay marriage law, which will be challenged by Referendum 74. Folks descended on the Tacoma Farmers' Market to dance in support of gay marriage.
