Anti-McKenna PAC readies $2.8m TV ad buy for fall
The first big television ad buy of Washington's fall election season is in.
Our Washington, a union-funded PAC opposing Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob McKenna, has reserved about $2.8 million worth of ad time statewide for the final month of the election.
A spokesman for the group confirmed the buy Tuesday.
Jim Rose, director of sales for KING TV, also independently confirmed the purchase and estimated $2.2 million of the TV time has been slated for the Seattle market. The rest will be in the Spokane and Yakima areas.
Rose said this is the first campaign he's seen reserve ad time for this fall, though he expects that to change soon as more campaigns start mapping out their TV strategies.
The ads are scheduled to be broadcast between Oct. 2 and election day, Nov. 6, according to an ad buyer tracking the information for the McKenna campaign.
Our Washington already has raised more than $900,000 -- more money than any other PAC in the state so far this year, according to Public Disclosure Commission records. It already has spent more than $222,000, mostly on polls and consulting.
The PACs biggest donors are the Washington Education Association ($250,000), the Democratic Governors Association ($200,000) and the Service Employees International Union ($150,000). All are allies of Jay Inslee, the Democratic candidate for governor.
SEIU spokesman Adam Glickman described the group as "a coalition that was formed to stand up for the middle class and to educate voters about the candidates for governor."
Glickman confirmed the general size of the buy but declined to offer further details of the group's ad strategy.
Randy Pepple, McKenna's campaign manager, attacked the ad buy in an emailed statement, saying Inslee's "special interest allies are already tipping their hand that he can count on millions of dollars in negative attack ads..." by groups "scared of the new direction Rob McKenna would take Washington State."
