Gregoire tells agencies: Dump cell phones, wall calendars

Posted by Andrew Garber

Nothing is apparently too small to scrap when faced with a $2 billion state budget shortfall.

Gov. Chris Gregoire sent out a directive on Friday telling agencies, among other things, to look for ways to reduce the number of cell phones and land lines and shrink the size of the state's fleet of cars.

Gregoire also ordered agencies to "tighten up procedures for employees who are placed on home assignment during an investigation of workplace issues, which often involves misconduct. The governor wants agencies to ensure home assignment is concluded as quickly as possible."

Other actions the governor plans to take include: extending from seven to 10 years the requirement for new automobile license plates; eliminating the printing and distribution of state wall calendars; and increasing use of electronic communications, like email, for state correspondence.

The governor's office says it hasn't projected how much money this might save because some agencies may already have made some of the cuts.

The directive comes after the governor last month proposed more than 160 individual cuts ranging from $100,000 to more than $100 million. The state Legislature will go into special session later this month to consider those proposals and others.
