McDermott's press secretary to join Al Franken's staff

Posted by Kyung M. Song

WASHINGTON -- Seattle Congressman Jim McDermott's press secretary is jumping ship and joining the staff of Sen. Al Franken of Minnesota.

Ed Shelleby, who succeeded McDermott's longtime spokesman, Mike DeCesare, last year, will leave the Seattle Democrat's office after Friday. Franken's own spokesman, Jess McIntosh, quit in July to become deputy communications director for EMILY'S List, which works to elect to office Democratic women who support abortion rights.

A Cincinnati native, Shelleby previously was a spokesman for the Children's Defense Fund. Diane Shust, McDermott's chief of staff, will handle Shelleby's duties until a replacement is hired.

Job switches among congressional staffers are not uncommon. Abbey Shilling, press secretary for Rep. Dave Reichert, R-Auburn, left earlier this year to become the communications director for Rep. Robert Wittman, R-VA.
