In Snohomish County, some voters were angry that about 1,100 ballots from the Lynnwood area weren't mailed until Monday because of a printing error.

That left voters only a few hours to return their ballots by the 8 p.m. deadline Tuesday. The concern was heightened because the ballots include the Edmonds School District levy, which would raise property taxes if approved.

But county officials said they had provided a range of options to the affected voters, including faxed or e-mailed ballots, a voting machine at the Lynnwood library, and several drop-off centers, including a Lynnwood assisted-living facility.

Garth Fell, elections manager for Snohomish County, said his office can't extend the voting deadline, even though the ballots were mailed late.

"There's no provision in state law that allows us to change the election day or the deadline for returning ballots," he said.

An Everett printer set aside the ballots because of mismatched bar codes. The ballots were supposed to be reprocessed, but were forgotten and not located until Monday.
