McGinn names police-chief search panelists

Posted by Jim Brunner

Seattle mayor-elect Mike McGinn this morning announced a 25-member search committee to look for a new Seattle police chief.

The group includes King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg, Seattle Police Officers' Guild President Rich O'Neill, City Councilmember Bruce Harrell, King County Labor Council head Dave Freiboth, and several neighborhood and civil rights activists.

As previously announced, the group will be co-chaired by Downtown Seattle Association President Kate Joncas and Charles Rolland, board president for Community and Parents for Public Schools of Seattle.

The panel plans an organizational meeting on Jan. 13 and expects to have a recommendation by May. McGinn's choice will be subject to confirmation by the City Council.

The police department has been overseen by interim chief John Diaz since May, when former Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske left to become U.S. drug czar.
