MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. —

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Wednesday he's undecided about running for president but didn't appear to agree with his mother that enough members of their family have occupied the White House.

Bush, widely considered among the leading potential contenders for the Republican nomination in 2016, took a pass on declaring his intentions when asked about the race after a speech to business and government leaders in northern Michigan.

"My thinking is not to think about it for a year," he said. "Life teaches you that you need to make decisions in the right time - not too early, not too late. ... I'll check in maybe a year from now, 15 months from now, something like that."

Bush, 60, who served as Florida governor from 1999-2007, said his choice about seeking the presidency would be difficult considering the effect on his family and "whether or not I've got the right stuff to be able to run and be successful at it. So I'm going to take my time doing that."

The issue of whether the nation is ready for another member of the Bush clan as president was raised by none other than Jeb's mother, former first lady Barbara Bush. Asked about the matter during an interview on NBC's "Today" show during the April celebration of the opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Library in Dallas, she responded that Jeb was "by far the best qualified man" but added, "We've had enough Bushes."

The Bush family matriarch, known for her outspokenness during the presidency of husband George H.W. Bush, said there were many worthy candidates.

Son George W. Bush has said he believes his brother should enter the race.

Jeb Bush was asked about his mother's remark Wednesday during a question-and-answer session following a speech during the Detroit Regional Chamber's annual policy conference at the Lake Huron resort town of Mackinac Island.

"What can I tell you? All I can say is we all have mothers, right?" he said as hundreds of listeners laughed and applauded.

"She is totally liberated, and God bless her."
