RIVERSIDE, Calif. —

When flyers appeared at Riverside City College on April Fool's Day saying the student body president was a sex offender, students were stunned by the cruel prank. They were even more stunned when they learned it was true.

The Riverside Press Enterprise ( http://bit.ly/10APlun) reports 40-year-old Doug Figueroa, who was elected in May, had admitted in 2005 to kidnapping and lewd acts with a boy under 14. His five-year prison sentence was suspended, and he's serving 10 years' probation.

Figueroa told the newspaper many students were aware of his status, and he is looking to change the stigma attached to some sex offenders.

College administrators released a statement saying Figueroa had notified them of his status as required, and they could find no rule keeping him from running for school office.
