The Associated Press

WASHINGTON —

The White House says it welcomes the demise of al-Qaida's third-ranking official, saying his death is a severe blow to the terrorist network.

Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs says Mustafa al-Yazid is one of the biggest al-Qaida targets to be captured or killed in five years. Al-Yazid is believed to have been al-Qaida's top commander in Afghanistan.

Al-Qaida says Mustafa al-Yazid was killed along with members of his family. A U.S. official says he was believed to have died in a U.S. missile strike.
