Ship captain getting medical treatment from Navy

The State Department says Capt. Richard Phillips is safe and receiving medical treatment aboard a Navy ship in the Indian Ocean.

WASHINGTON —

The State Department says Capt. Richard Phillips is safe and receiving medical treatment aboard a Navy ship in the Indian Ocean.

The American sea captain was freed Sunday after being held by Somali pirates.

State Department spokeswoman Laura Tischler says Phillips is free and safe, and is getting medical care.

She could not say if Phillips was receiving medical care because he had been injured or if he was being treated for exposure after his ordeal.
