Hilton Head Island wonders about SC law on requiring dogs to be leashed on the beach
The town of Hilton Head Island wants to make sure it can decide if dogs must be leashed when on the beach.
The town of Hilton Head Island wants to make sure it can decide if dogs must be leashed when on the beach.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported Thursday that a resident told town officials earlier this year that a state law exists that would apparently prevent the town from having looser regulations on pets on the beach.
Mayor Tom Peeples requested a review after a woman was bitten by a dog on the beach.
Hilton Head island has had a local law since 1984 allowing owners to allow their dogs to roam free outside designated swimming areas most of the year.
A spokesman for the attorney general's office says it has never been asked about the state law.
Peeples wants to keep the town's law so it can be dog friendly. But Mayor Pro Tem Ken Heitzke worries unleashed dogs are a safety risk.
