Dragon Boat Festival on Lake Union

ALAN BERNER / THE SEATTLE TIMES

More than four dozen teams and almost 1,000 paddlers competed in daylong competitions at the Dragon Boat Festival on South Lake Union Saturday. There are 20 paddlers per boat, with an additional drummer setting the pace and another person on the tiller. Two race courses of 250 meters and 500 meters test the mettle of the paddlers. Sixty strokes per minute is common race pace.

Before taking to the course, Alyssa Reynolds gets a big lift from Alexander Nguyen, both are paddlers with the Starbucks Hometeam dragon boat.
