Future 520 span inches forward

KEN LAMBERT / THE SEATTLE TIMES

Looking east from the University of Washington, a new section of the Highway 520 bridge over Lake Washington, at left, is seen Monday, dovetailing toward the existing bridge. This tall segment of the new Highway 520 span, called West Connection Bridge, will be finished late this year, just offshore from Seattle. Once the longer floating section on Lake Washington opens to traffic in 2016, it will carry westbound traffic to this point -- where cars will temporarily shift back onto the old highway to enter Seattle. Eventually, another fixed bridge section will reach the Seattle shore.
