Valentines in Ink

BETTINA HANSEN / THE SEATTLE TIMES

Mandy Maquiling of Lynnwood gets tattooed on Valentine's Day by artist Eric Marts at Seattle Tattoo Emporium in Capitol Hill. The Eiffel Tower design reflects where her husband Mike proposed to her in 2007 - his name is at the base. "I guess everybody knew but me," said Maquiling of her surprise that day. "It was the perfect place for it to happen." The couple didn't plan to spend their Valentine's Day getting tattooed - but it just so happened that way on the schedule.

While he didn't get this tattoo today, he got work done on a design of the Hawaiian Islands on his leg. RIGHT: Mike watches as Eric Marts works on Mandy's tattoo.

Eric Marts at Seattle Tattoo Emporium readies his equipment for Mike and Mandy's tattoos. He's worked for the company since 1991 and his position on getting a lover's name in ink has changed over the years. "I used to try to talk people out of getting them, but now I just do a nice job," he said. "It's kind of like job security, too. Love doesn't last as long as a tattoo does, so then they come back, and you cover them up."

Mandy looks up at Mike before Eric Marts starts working on her tattoo. She admitted she was a little nervous for the pain. The two have been married for five years.
