Snow! Season slides open, briefly

STEVE RINGMAN / THE SEATTLE TIMES

A snowboarder drops into the powder at the top of the Green Valley bowl for his first run during the brief Tuesday opening at Crystal Mountain. After a heavy snowfall over the weekend, Crystal opened one lift (the gondola) to 53 skiers and snowboarders for three hours. That made it the first seasonal ski area to open this fall in the United States. But it likely won't reopen until late November.
