Snow island on Mount Rainier

ERIKA SCHULTZ / THE SEATTLE TIMES

Hikers crowd atop a snow patch on the Burroughs Mountain Trail near Sunrise on Mount Rainier. The trail, 7 miles round trip, offers a stunning view of the White River and Emmons Glacier and was named after naturalist John Burroughs. Summer is hanging on around here, though, with mostly sunny weather in the forecast.
