Baby giraffe ventures into the world

BETTINA HANSEN / THE SEATTLE TIMES

The new baby giraffe at Woodland Park Zoo makes his second appearance outside the barn in their exhibit with mother giraffe Olivia Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013. Born a week ago on Aug. 6, he's grown four inches from his original six-foot height. Zookeepers say he has been nursing regularly and is starting to sample solids, chewing on the low-hanging leaves outside the barn door. He can be seen periodically coming out for some sunshine and leaves between naps, following mama giraffe Olivia. Her sister, Tufani, is kept in a separate part of the exhibit, but keepers are hoping to combine all three in the next several days.
