Tuxes and dresses collide in Prom Dress Rugby

BETTINA HANSEN / THE SEATTLE TIMES

Tuxes and dresses collide as the Seattle Quake men's rugby football club takes on the Seattle Breakers women's rugby team for the fourth annual Prom Dress Rugby exhibition match at Cal Anderson Park in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle Saturday. The match coincides with Pride Weekend, and raises money for POCAAN (People of Color Against AIDS Network). Rather than full tackle, the teams played a less-intense team tackle version of the game, and audience members were encouraged to donate money in exchange for calling plays and forcing wardrobe changes, where many sweaty dresses were exchanged.

The Seattle Quake treated onlookers to a variety of styles and colors of prom dresses.

Marlys Larson grimaces as Ryan Davis zips up his sweaty yellow dress for her during a costume change, one of the crowd-favorite features of Prom Dress Rugby. Costume changes, penalties, changes of possession, tries (similar to a touchdown) could all be bought with the proceeds benefiting POCAAN.
