Tossing chums to chums at Bear Affair

ALAN BERNER / THE SEATTLE TIMES

Before feeding the resident grizzlies, Pike Place Fish Market fishmongers tossed chum salmon to people in the crowd outside the grizzly-bear habitat at the Woodland Park Zoo on Thursday. Four chums were tossed to promote this Saturday's event called Bear Affair. Chris Bell, right, from the Market assists.

Keema, a 19-year-old male grizzly, retrieved this tossed chum from the moat separating bears from the public at the Woodland Park Zoo. It's one thing to toss a salmon at the Pike Place Market but another to heave it a much greater distance to the bears. Each of the four fish tossed landed well short.
