Preparing the shell for Opening Day

ELLEN M. BANNER / THE SEATTLE TIMES

Jan Martinek tests the maneuverability of Ty the Tacoma Turtle's head as members of the Tacoma Yacht Club prep him for Opening Day. Ty is the mascot for the Five C's, which belongs to Mike and Karen Cameron. He'll join the boat parade, head and limbs bobbing with the help of two people crouched underneath him. This is the Seattle Yacht Club's 93rd Opening Day parade; the theme this year is Hawaiian Magic. Dragon boats kick off the festivities at 10 a.m., with crew races following. The boat parade will start around noon and last about 2½ hours.
