Mariners pitcher Joe Saunders went the distance Monday for a 6-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles, their fourth win in five games on this home stand.
I watched him come back into the dugout and take his congratulations from teammates. The bullpen are always the last guys to the dugout. As Saunders was making his way to the post game interview in the dugout, he turned to them out about midfield and raised his hands in celebration. Then he turned his back to do his interview. As the bullpen players reached the dugout you could see mischief in their eyes. I was just in front of Saunders - watching both him and the players. They were clearly talking about doing something, and I kind of knew what. The cooler of Gatorade made its way quickly to Saunders who had no idea it was coming. They had the total element of surprise. Saunders couldn't have been happier. After the Gatorade bath he got even more hugs from his friends in the bullpen.
A long time ago I remember the Mariners doing shaving cream pies. Back in the Griffey era. I haven't seen that type of celebration in a very long time. And it was wonderful to see it tonight.
