Husband and wife alphorn players Nels Magelssen and Evelyn Zeller draw the attention of a passer-by as they play outside Café Suisse during the noon hour Thursday, marking the first anniversary of the Seattle business at 2008 Westlake Ave. The horns lack keys or valves so the notes are arrived at by changes in breath and with the lips. Hers is a traditional wood horn and his is a telescoping, lightweight carbon-fiber piece. The alphorns are about 12-feet long, or about "the length of two Swiss men," said Zeller.
