Rider Jim Johnson takes Zubberiffic, a 2-year-old thoroughbred, out on the racetrack Friday, the first day of training at Emerald Downs in Auburn. This was the first day trainers and horses were allowed back to their stables and the track after the off-season.

A horse gets a bath as the first day of training kicks off. According to Vince Bruun, director of media relations at the racetrack, 900-1,000 horses are expected by the start of the season.
