Hands-on holiday tradition

Since 1989, family and friends from all over the Puget Sound have gathered at the Nisei Veterans Hall in Seattle to celebrate New Year's Day with mochi making, a potluck buffet, basketball and card games. Mochi, a Japanese rice cake, is traditionally eaten on New Year's Day. Two brothers, John and Toshi Uno, who were Nisei veterans of WWII, decided to find a larger venue to hold the annual celebration that had outgrown their family homes.
