New bike counter logs bridge trips

No more guessing, spinning and extrapolating: Bicycles crossing the Fremont Bridge are now being electronically tallied. Seattle activated its new bike counter Thursday. City staffers expect 1 million bike trips a year. The $30,000 device, intended to provide research and encourage bike riding, was funded by the Mark and Susan Torrance Foundation and acquired by the Cascade Bicycle Club, which gave it to the city. Seattle is the second U.S. city to have one, after Portland's made its debut on the Hawthorne Bridge two months ago.
