Standing at Artist Point near Mt. Baker

ERIKA SCHULTZ / THE SEATTLE TIMES

Nathan Wilson, 17, and Emily Wilson, 13, visit Artist Point at the end of the Mount Baker Highway Wednesday, Aug. 22. Last year, Artist Point was closed due to high snow levels. This year, access to the viewpoint started July 23, 2012, and it will remain open until the first major snowfall, which often occurs in September or October. Nathan and Emily visited Artist Point with their mother, Ada Wilson, while on an overnight camping trip. The teenagers slid or "skied" down small snowy hills in their tennis shoes. "They are in seventh heaven," said Ada Wilson.
