50 years of the Seattle Monorail

For fifty years, the Seattle Center Monorail has been shuttling back and forth between Seattle Center and Westlake Center. Festivities were held today to commemorate the one-mile long transit line that was called the "highway of the future." Read more about the anniversary and view more photos in the gallery.

A Seattle World's Fair monorail train, now officially under the operation of the Seattle Transit System, speeds its Fifth Ave. track with a load of passengers from the fairgrounds to a downtown terminal. This train has been in operation since last weekend, carrying thousands of local sightseers to and from the fair, scheduled to open April 21. A second train is to be in operation soon. Towering over fairgrounds, behind apartment building in the left background, is 600-foot-high Space Needle, which has a revolving restaurant and observation platform on top.
