The Reader's Lens, 2014

Photographer: Mike Coverdale, Westport, Grays Harbor County

Photo taken: Feb. 28, Westhaven State Park, Westport

Photographer's description: “I used a Canon 5D with 70/200 mm lens with doubler. About 15 surfers were taking advantage of offshore winds to carve on the big waves.”

Expert says: “This photo is an ‘almost’ for me, but I still really enjoy it. I like the color gradient in the water, the captured moment with the surfer and the water spray. I think this really needed a longer lens, though. Wide shots for surfing are nice if they show the massiveness of the wave, or something that makes the frame unique. But my eye wants the surfer closer and much more prominent in the frame. You can rent long lenses for not too much from local camera stores for a weekend to experiment. All in all, great job by the photographer to get out and capture this moment rarely seen by many people in the Pacific Northwest.”
