The Reader's Lens, 2014

Photographer: Leia Maminta Smith, Seattle

Photo taken: Sept. 6, Seattle

Photographer’s description: “I was watching my son’s recreational soccer game (at Ballard High School soccer field) when I noticed that the moon was already visible. Then an airplane came by and I took one shot as it passed by the moon. It was a nice surprise to see that it looked like it was either landing or lifting the moon. I took this using my Canon SL1, ISO 100, 194 mm, f/5.6 at 1/500 sec.”

Expert says: “This photo is so, so, so close! I love that the plane looks like it’s lifting the moon, and the light hitting the plane (and the moon) are really nice. What this shot ultimately needed was a longer lens. I cropped in on it tight (I liked making it vertical with a little extra sky on top of the moon and plane) to see what it would look like — so nice! But it starts losing that crispness that it needs. Either way, two thumbs up to Leia for noticing the moon and the airplane flying by at the perfect spot. Nice job capturing that moment.”
