Captain Francesco Schettino waits for the arrival of the judges in the court room of the converted Teatro Moderno theater at the end of a pause of his trial, in Grosseto, Italy, Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013. The trial in Italy of the captain of the shipwrecked Costa Concordia is yielding an unusual alliance of sorts. Both the lawyers for Francesco Schettino and those representing the victims say he is not the only one responsible, and many things went wrong that might have contributed to the death toll when the cruise liner crashed into a reef off a Tuscan island in 2012. On Tuesday both sets of lawyers pressed court-appointed experts about emergency pumps not working after the collision. Thirty-two people died and many others were injured or left traumatized. Schettino is charged with manslaughter, causing the shipwreck and abandoning ship.
