The Heygate estate in central London was built in 1974 as social housing and housed around 3000 people, but fell into a state of disrepair, gaining a reputation for crime and poverty. The estate is due to be demolished as part of the ??1.5billion GBP 'Elephant & Castle regeneration scheme', and replaced with 2,500 'affordable' new homes. The area has become popular with street artists, storytellers, and guerrilla gardeners and attracts an array of urban wildlife including bats, birds and mammals.
