Jim Bates

Jim Bates, a lifelong Seattle-area resident, has been a news photographer for 32 years. He has a degree from Brigham Young University in communication, with a photojournalism concentration. He has worked for The Seattle Times since 1990 and previously worked for several other newspapers in Washington State. Bates has received numerous awards for his work from the National Press Photographers Association, the Associated Press and the Society of Professional Journalists. He was awarded first place for spot news from SPJ, 2002. Bates formerly served as a regional director for NPPA. Bates was a participating photographer in "One Day In Washington" (1985), and was picture editor for two books featuring Seattle photographers by Towery Publishing: "Seattle Pacific Gem" (1997) and "Seattle: The Time Has Come" (2001).
