Ollie May Walls, 49, and her mother, Birdella, 74, live together in the West End of Louisville. The pair spend a lot of their days on the front porch of their century-old clapboard house, talking to neighbors passing by. The Walls are from Tennessee, and describe themselves as being raised on grits and church hymns. This photo was made on a cross-country journey to Ground Zero in New York City ten days after Sept. 11.
