Firefighters slump from exhaustion after an early morning fire destroyed a home in Burien, Wash., Oct 11, 1974. The firemen are, from left, Joe Guild, Tom Gudmestad, Chris Kitterman and Jim Flick. The homeowners, who had taken in a stray dog a few days before, were awakened and likely saved by the dog's barking. The photo, which many readers felt captured a welcome sense of common heroism and commitment, won the Pulitzer Prize for news photography.
