The Reader's Lens, 2013

Photographer:
Julie Takasugi, Mercer Island

Photo taken: Feb. 10, from a commercial plane over Seattle

Photographer's description: “With heavy fog over some areas of Seattle, the Space Needle peeked out above the fog. Taken with a Canon S100.”

Expert says: “The low-lying clouds clean up what would otherwise be a busy frame and make it so our eye immediately goes to the Space Needle. This angle on the Needle isn’t seen on a regular basis, allowing the image to be even more unusual. In any photography, try getting low on your shots or getting a step ladder to shoot from above — it’ll make your photos different and add an intricate element. Tip: I’d crop a tiny bit from the top and some from the bottom of this image, keeping the Needle to the Rule of Thirds.”
