The Reader's Lens, 2013

Photographer: Dan Victor, Seattle

Photo taken: March 29, University of Washington Quadrangle

Photographer's description: "This unposed photo was taken as we strolled through the UW Quad. The cherry trees were in full bloom and students were lounging on the lawn. To our surprise, one was in a tree. Taken with a Canon PowerShot ELPH 100 HS."

Expert says: "Our photographer Ellen Banner came across this same young man, in the same tree, the same day. But her published photo was a bit different. This just goes to show how a photographer’s perspective, or ‘eye,’ can change the outcome of the photo. And you can have completely different equipment, in this case just a point-and-shoot, and still make a great photo. I love how the young man is framed by the trunk and limbs of the tree, staying true to the rule of thirds."
