The Reader's Lens, 2013

Photographer: Matt Anglin, Seattle

Photo taken: Sept. 1, Seattle

Photographer's description: “I have a huge Rose of Sharon bush in my front yard, and it is in full bloom. As I was taking photos of the flowers on this glorious sunny day, I noticed there were dozens of bees flying in and out of the flowers, and they were covering themselves in pollen. I waited for this bee to fly out of the flower, and he caught the light just right as he flew by. Photo taken with my Canon 60D that I have had for about one year.”

Expert says: “Great job in noticing the bees were covered in pollen. I love that he stands out against the pink of the flower, especially with the chosen depth of field. Since he’s such a tiny creature, I might crop in to emphasize the pollen on him — maybe a square around the main flower, but leaving some green to create that contrast.”
