The Reader's Lens, 2012

Photographer: Hiroshi Yamamoto, Seattle
Photo taken: Jan. 18, near Ravenna Park, Seattle
Photographer's description: "University of Washington students live it up on their day off school during the big snowstorm. Hopi Jayne, Tom McConnell and Jacob Erikson go over a jump while riding a bed mattress on a tarp."
Expert says: "This week's photo has some great elements: The subjects are stopped at peak action; the camera angle is low, allowing the viewer see the height of the jump; and the reaction of the bystanders relates back to the action of the sledders. Suggestions: The background of the image is incredibly busy, which distracts from the main subject. To correct this, use a longer lens and smaller aperture, or shoot at a lower angle (or from another side) letting the sky or snow-covered road be the background. In action shots like these it is important to anticipate the point of action and purposefully compose the elements around it."
