"The winter months in the Pacific Northwest are a great time to photograph birds. The variety is amazing. These are buffleheads taking flight in a wetland just south of Stanwood. Good light is required to capture these guys in motion. They move very fast. Taken with a Nikon D300, speed 1/1,600, f 5.6, ISO 250." Expert says: "Great action, nice light and good composition with effective cropping put this image above the rest. The fast shutter speed freezes the action of puddles and reach of the wings which our eyes and brains cannot register." — Kevin Fujii, Seattle Times picture editor
