Garfield High grad paints halls with history

Garfield High graduate Gabrielle Abbott is completing an almost 300-foot-long mural on the history of Seattle's Central District on the walls of the school she attended. Dr. King was invited to Seattle by the Rev. Dr. Samuel B. McKinney of Mount Zion Baptist Church and to the school by its principal, Frank Hanawalt. Abbott is studying for her Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of the Arts in London. She estimates she's spent about 2,400 hours on the project and says it's "a labor of love." Abbott says she was not the greatest student while at Garfield and that some tried to dissuade her from a career in the arts. Her project, scheduled for completion next month, speaks to her success.
