Squirt, the resident female giant Pacific octopus, can only sit and watch Friday's events, having mated the day before with Rain. Soon, both will be released into Puget Sound to finish their life cycles. She'll lay thousands of eggs, tend them until they hatch and then she'll die. He'll likely die before her in a den he finds in the waters not far from the aquarium.
