2012 Pictures of the Year from Seattle Times photographers

A FOUNDATION FOR HEALING Ayanna Brown is overcome with emotion as she and her husband, Louis, hold a picture of their son, Alajawan, who was killed in 2010 at age 12. They have started a foundation in his name to help kids in the Skyway area pay for camps, sports and other activities.

The Browns had just completed a large backpack drive when I arrived to take a portrait of them. I immediately felt a deep connection. We talked a bit but soon they became very quiet and Ayanna started to cry. I made a few frames and went over to hug them, tears streaming down my face as well. We had a long conversation after that and have continued to keep in touch. I think this photograph is important because it touches on the deep wounds of violence that plague so many in our communities.
