2012 Pictures of the Year from Seattle Times photographers

TEARS FOR A TROOPER Jordan Whittaker, 6, of Port Orchard, cries during a March 1 memorial procession for State Trooper Tony Radulescu, who was fatally shot during a traffic stop in Kitsap County. Joshua J. Blake killed the trooper and then himself.

On a cold morning in Kent, Jordan Whittaker held a sign saying "We love you Trooper Radulescu" as he waited for the long, slow procession to come down the road. I'd been photographing people waiting patiently along with the boy. When the procession appeared, the crowd went silent and the tears started to flow down Jordan's face. It's hard to push a camera in someone's face when they're grieving, but at a distance with a telephoto lens I shot about three frames and turned away knowing the image reflected the grieving a community was going through.
