SOMEWHERE, UNDER THE RAINBOW A double rainbow appears over Whidbey Island's south end on the morning of Sept. 28. The photo was taken from a boat near Mukilteo, looking west.
A record dry stretch converged with a robust return of salmon to Puget Sound this summer. Many mornings I was able to launch my boat in Everett, catch a couple fish and still get to work on time. The last Friday in September was no exception until, as the sun was topping the Cascades, a small weather system erupted in a double rainbow that lasted nearly half an hour. I had only an iPhone to capture the moment, but the spectacle overrode the equipment. Apparently there is a pot of silver (salmon) under those rainbows.
