Snowy owl released in Volunteer Park

Rescued on Capitol Hill in mid-November, a snowy old is released in Volunteer Park Saturday by Sarvey Wildlife Care Center. The owl, with a wingspan of more than three feet, left its crate, lower right, a second after the door was opened as scores watched, flying off silently. The bird was found emaciated on the ground three weeks ago grasping its prey, a gull. Kestrel SkyHawk from the wildlife center said it would likely find a mate next year when it flies to more familiar habitat in Northern Alaska or Northern Canada.
