Artificial life support keeps sockeye from extinction

The Sunbeam Dam, built in 1910, was just one of many insults to Snake River sockeye. The dam was built to power a mine that failed within two years, but the dam blocked all fish passage in the Salmon River to the Stanley Basin until 1934.
