Josh Sadow-Hasenberg of Seattle holds the family bucket while sons Zachie, 8, and Eli, 11, peek in the bachground at the Dahlia Barn in North Bend recently. Their family spent the morning hiking Mount Si, which is nearby. The warm, dry summer has extended the season for sun-loving dahlias, and the Dahlia Barn, which usually closes in September, will be staying open through this Sunday (Oct. 7) as long as the weather holds. Owners Aimee and Jerry Sherrill turned a former run-down horse farm into the Dahlia Barn and opened in 2004 as a small you-pick, also selling cut flowers, tubers and free advice to folks wanting to grow their own. For volume, they have a larger growing operation of about 5,000 plants in Thorp. This weekend will likely be the last weekend they'll be open for you-pick.
